Flagstone Walkway Installation in Springfield, OR

# Flagstone Walkway Installation in Springfield, Oregon: Before & After

This side yard in Springfield, Oregon started out as little more than wasted space — a narrow strip between the fence and the house, covered in landscaping fabric and loose gravel, mostly used for storage. Our job was to turn it into something the homeowner could actually use: a clean, durable walkway built to hold up for decades.

## Building a Solid Base

Every good hardscape starts below the surface. We set forms to define the new walkway and planned the layout with future additions in mind, so the space could grow if the homeowner ever wants to expand it down the road. From there, we brought in 5 yards of 3/4-inch crushed gravel, compacting it in 2-inch layers and wetting the material as we went. This step matters more than most people realize — a properly compacted base is what keeps a walkway from shifting, settling, or cracking years down the line.

## Reinforcing for the Long Haul

Once the base was set, we ran three half-inch rebar lines the full length of the walkway, with cross supports every 4 feet for added strength. After wetting the gravel one more time, we poured 6 yards of fiber-reinforced concrete over the top, giving the whole structure a rigid, crack-resistant foundation.

## Setting the Sunset Gold Flagstone

With the concrete in place, we mortar-set 1.5 tons of Sunset Gold flagstone across the entire walkway, including a stepped landing partway down to handle a slight grade change. This stone brings in warm gold, rust, and gray tones, and since every piece is naturally shaped and colored, no two sections look exactly alike.

## Cleaning & Sealing

After letting the concrete and mortar cure for a few days, we wet-washed and wire-brushed every stone to bring out its natural color and texture. A few days later, we sealed the entire walkway with a high-quality, breathable wet-look sealer — protecting it from moisture while still letting the stone breathe, which helps prevent staining and cracking over time.

## The Result

In about a week, this forgotten side yard became a finished, functional walkway built to last for decades.
